in this life

Jesus tells us his followers that there is one constant in this life: trouble. “In this life you will have trouble.” We may as well get use to it. We live in a fallen world and in that way share our lot with everyone. And in Jesus we are up against the world, the flesh and the devil. Of course we are to take whatever way there is for us in the way of Jesus. A way of love, and of carrying the cross. Following him along with others. So that we meet the challenge of this life in the way of love. Loving God with all our being and doing, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.

Jesus went on to say, “But be of good cheer (or, take heart), I have overcome the world!” Yes, we follow the one who by his death destroyed him who had the power of death, the devil, and freed us from the fear and tyranny of death. Who has overcome the world, so that we by faith also are victorious. And who gives us a new life. Jesus having overcome the world is the other constant we have, which we’re to live by in this life.

Keeping these two simple truths in mind can help us along the way. The way will be fraught with difficulty, even tragedy. But in Jesus we are led in victory. And we long to bring others with us in the way in him.
