nothing separates us from God’s love in Jesus

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

As John Calvin pointed out there are many dangers in this world. We are mortal. Even in this day and age, there is no shortage of possible ways to die, nor of bad things which can happen. And for the follower of Christ, added on is the opposition from the world, the flesh and the devil, in an unholy alliance against Christ and all who are in Christ.

What we need to become assured of and learn to rest in is God’s love for us in Jesus. God is our Father in and through Jesus. In fact through Jesus in love, God has actually reconciled the world to himself (God’s Self) not counting people’s sins against them. So that through Jesus everyone is called to be reconciled to God. For us in Jesus we experience that love firsthand, poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

I find that no matter what I face, or whatever evil attack seems to hit me, usually sooner than later, God’s love through Jesus prevails in my heart and life. Of course that’s only because of God’s grace, it is not at all because of any good in me. In fact the realization that it is not of me at all, but that in me resides only weakness and sin helps me come to the one who alone is Savior as well as Lord, Jesus.

What we need to become glued to is the thought and reality that nothing at all, no matter what, can separate us from God’s love in Jesus. To learn to live in that love. And even when we are bombarded with something alien, to live in a posture of receiving that love. This is at the heart of following Jesus, to live in God’s love in and through Jesus, and to reciprocate that love to God and others. As we become more and more assured of this kind of love, and settled in it, we can go on, come what may, with confidence that in Jesus, God is with us and God is good. And that God’s love will prevail when all else fails. We in Jesus are together in this for the world.
