not loving like we ought

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

1 Thessalonians 3:12

It occurred to me that sometimes we simply bow out, that our love reaches the end of which we’re not willing to go any further. Or we may wish we wouldn’t have to. That goes to show just how meager our own love can be. And it also indicates that we have yet to tap into God’s infinite love in his grace to us and to the world in Jesus.

But there’s hope for us, as the above prayer from the Apostle Paul to the church in Thessalonica makes clear. And it’s something as is everything of grace which we are to grow in. In other words we don’t simply arrive to perfection in this life. Instead we are to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus (2 Peter 3:18). And back to the 1 Thessalonians passage, we see that this is a part of our growth in holiness which is to be completed when Christ returns (verse 13, click the passage quoted above), a process we’re in right now in this present life.

So the next time I’ve had enough of so and so or this and that should be a time for prayer, probably for confession of sin, and a renewal of our commitment to follow on come what may to the end. In the love that is ours in Jesus, not just for us, but for the world.
