Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
It is important to know that we’re in a spiritual battle. Actually, unless we’re completely asleep, it won’t take long to realize it, and unless we’re in a deep sleep, we’ll get an unpleasant awakening.
We need to realize what we’re up against. And it’s also important to understand what we’re not actually resisting. This is not about struggling with other humans in physical warfare, nor any other kind of warfare for that matter, be it psychological or whatever. After all, none of that is acceptable for the church, for the Christ follower.
What we can’t escape is a cosmic, spiritual struggle. We are involved in that, whether we like it or not. And frankly, it’s not comfortable. I doubt that it’s something we’re to go out looking for. It’s upon us, and we’re told that our basic stance is simply to resist in the strength of God’s power with the whole armor of God in place.
God will help us understand how. We do well to meditate slowly on the passage (click link for full passage), looking to the Lord for understanding. God will give us that, and see us through so that indeed when all is said and done we’ll be standing firm in the Lord.
In and through Jesus.
