white supremacy is a lie

So then, remember that at one time you gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision”—a circumcision made in the flesh by human hands— remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us, abolishing the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone; in him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.

Ephesians 2:11-22; NRSVue

I don’t know where to start when it comes to finding a passage in Scripture which refutes the lie of white supremacy. There are so many beginning with the creation accounts in Genesis 1-2. Nevertheless, the pastors and Christian writers in the United States citing the Bible the most were far more supportive of at least something of the notion of white supremacy, defending slavery from the very same letter quoted above and from other places in Scripture. Genesis 4 and 9, the mark of Cain and the curse of Canaan are defenses of white supremacy in my lifetime, I would imagine still held by some to this day. There’s no doubt that the lie of white supremacy is alive and well.

History tells a completely different story. Civilization began in Africa, much that is noteworthy from those of dark skin. All the so-called races, the category of different races being a human invention, has been marked by evil done. For those who happen to be light in skin tone to think they are one up on the rest, more evolved or whatever simply makes no sense when it’s all said and done. European Christian nations routinely went to war killing each other by the tens of thousands and more. Is that supposed to be superior, civilized? Etc. We can see that religion all over the world can be dangerous along with all the ideologies (like Communism with Stalin, etc.) which insist on imposing their way and law on everyone, yes, most certainly Christianity included. Part of the problem comes when authoritarian solutions and measures are accepted and even promoted.

The writer to the Ephesians beautifully expresses how the oneness of all humanity becomes evident in Christ and by the Spirit (Ephesians 4). Divisions are broken down, destroyed, and what is left is one new humanity together in Christ. Not homogenized, but in all its manifold beauty. What humanity is in creation, it also is in new creation. What happened in “the fall” or because of sin and the separation that comes from that is not to be accepted as part of creation and held as law. We see clearly in Christ that all divisions: Jew and gentile, slave and free, male and female, and whatever other factions and binaries, are all broken down so that what is left is one new humanity in all its diversity. This is evident on the face of it, just by natural observation. All too often religion or ideology of any kind clouds this. The true teaching in Christ confirms and celebrates and makes this alive even now.
