Touch me and see, for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. Yet for all their joy they were still disbelieving and wondering, and he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate in their presence.

Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised, so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

when the message seems overwhelming (or even underwhelming)

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

The gospel according to Mark’s ending is most interesting. There are scholars to this day who disagree on this. From what I’ve gathered, some believe a longer ending was lost, and the intermediate and longer endings of Mark were added to make up for that. I certainly am not qualified to venture even a guess, but I will stick to what we see in our Bibles which reflects the overall consensus that the book ends as quoted above (see NET footnote in link above for further explanation). Mark does seem to be abrupt, in fact one might say it ends the way it begins and even is throughout.

We will let Mark’s gospel account of this event stand on its own, without referring to the other gospels: Matthew, Luke and John. There are other things to consider here, and we always do well to read it all carefully and thoughtfully. But I wish to touch briefly on one thing: the way the message came across to the two women. It is more than apparent that they were not only taken by surprise but found this news overwhelming. For some reason it not only did not connect with them, but we might well imagine, even seemed to threaten them. They were certainly thrown off course.

As the CEB Study Bible tells us, “The women shouldn’t be surprised to find an empty tomb (see Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:34)…The man assures them that Jesus’ body has been raised” (note on Mark 16:6). The Lord had repeatedly told the disciples that after soon suffering and dying, he would be raised. The women were surely not out of the loop. The “terror,” “amazement” (NEB: “dread”; NET: “bewilderment”), and being “afraid,” suggests being overwhelmed. We could say underwhelmed as well for them at that time, because this message brought no comfort or joy to them.

What about us? I often hear Scripture read and discussed, or read it myself, and sometimes I’m very moved, but other times, not at all. Life can still seem overwhelming, what is read not connecting and maybe even adding a heavier weight to what I’m already carrying. If we’re going to consider what the ending of this gospel might be suggesting to us today, we need to think about our experience and how what we read, indeed the profession of our faith seems to make little or no difference at times. We hear or read it, and that’s well and good. But if that’s the end, period, not well and good at all.

Mark’s gospel leaves us hanging. Again, from the CEB Study Bible, on 16:8: “The chapter ends abruptly. Some scholars think Mark wrote an open-ended Gospel on purpose…” The original readers/hearers along with us know what followed. So we can find purpose in the unexpected ending, to help and encourage us when we find the promise of the gospel either overwhelming, or indeed underwhelming to us.

Lamentations 3:1-9, 19-24; NRSVue

Phil Yoder recently gave the most thought-provoking message I’ve ever heard on the issue of what it means to give up on one’s hopes and dreams maybe even in the midst of living them out, all of that “buried” so that by and by something better can emerge. That’s my own description of it, but if you do nothing more, stop and listen to this.

During Holy Week, Saturday is the day when Jesus is buried, and all the hopes and dreams of his followers buried with him. All hope was gone, or at least in their experience it certainly seemed so. Jesus had told them on at least three occasions that he would suffer, be killed, and on the third day rise again. But they simply didn’t understand what he was saying. It made no sense to them at all in their understanding of Scripture and the scheme of things.

A lot of Christians seem to look at Holy Week as Easter week, just skipping over everything prior to get to Jesus’s resurrection. Others will include the other days, especially Good Friday and maybe Maundy Thursday as well, but Holy Saturday is just a footnote. But carefully considering everything in that story as well as in the rest of Scripture like in the passage above from Lamentations, we do much better to stop on this Holy Saturday and dwell on and in this day.

Something mighty and most wonderful was going to happen, but it was hidden from the disciples. We do well to stay here. In the Christian faith death is always followed by burial and only then comes resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 6:4). And as noted above, a necessary metaphorical burial of sorts is a part of this life. All the hopes and dreams in us, every one of them important, but necessarily submerged into the darkness of death, with the promise that the full good and life of such will emerge and break forth.

On Good Friday we remember the suffering and death of Jesus. I notice the tendency in others and myself as well to want to skip to Easter, to downplay the death itself in favor of the resurrection. Death is nothing more than the means to the end of resurrection. Yes, death is great in that it’s the gateway to resurrection, but since we are now a resurrection people, we no longer need to think about death since in Christ, death is swallowed up in life by Christ’s resurrection.

That does neither justice to the narratives in the gospel accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) nor in what follows in the New Testament. We are followers of the Lamb, partaking simultaneously of Christ’s death and resurrection in this life. Unlike Jesus, we are not yet in our resurrection bodies. And yet Jesus still suffers with us by the Spirit. In fact, we are now his body on earth.

Because of that, even though still in “the days of our humiliation” in that we can suffer and die, yet we are also living a new life through Jesus during which we are to come boldly to the throne of grace to receive the help we need from the one who has lived through the same experiences. As we receive, we also give, able to empathize with those who experience the same struggles we ourselves go through, or who struggle like us, whatever those struggles may be. Jesus’s help with us.

Good Friday: Isaiah 52:13-53:12; Psalm 22; Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9; John 18:1-19:42

See, my servant shall prosper;
he shall be exalted and lifted up
and shall be very high.
Just as there were many who were astonished at him
—so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance,

The slave’s name was Malchus. Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

So the soldiers, their officer, and the Jewish police arrested Jesus and bound him. First they took him to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better to have one person die for the people.

Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, but Peter was standing outside at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Peter in. The woman said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” Now the slaves and the police had made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were standing around it and warming themselves. Peter also was standing with them and warming himself.

Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. Jesus answered, “I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret. Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said.” When he had said this, one of the police standing nearby struck Jesus on the face, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” Jesus answered, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?” Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” Again Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed.

Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover. So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” They answered, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews replied, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.” (This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.)

Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate asked him, “What is truth?”

After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him. But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover. Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” They shouted in reply, “Not this man but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a rebel.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they dressed him in a purple robe. They kept coming up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and striking him on the face. Pilate went out again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no case against him.” So Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the police saw him, they shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him; I find no case against him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has claimed to be the Son of God.”

Now when Pilate heard this, he was more afraid than ever. He entered his headquarters again and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. Pilate therefore said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you and power to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” From then on Pilate tried to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. Everyone who claims to be a king sets himself against Caesar.”

When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat on the judge’s bench at a place called The Stone Pavement, or in Hebrew Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, and it was about noon. He said to the Jews, “Here is your King!” They cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.

So they took Jesus, and carrying the cross by himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. There they crucified him and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them. Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Many of the Jews read this inscription because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it but cast lots for it to see who will get it.” This was to fulfill what the scripture says,

“They divided my clothes among themselves,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”

And that is what the soldiers did.

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath, especially because that Sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth, so that you also may continue to believe.) These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, “None of his bones shall be broken.” And again another passage of scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.”

After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed his body. Nicodemus, who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the burial custom of the Jews. Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

come what may, we’re to *love* one another

When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 13:31-35; NRSVue

In the midst of the mayhem, of everything (John 13), Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment. That when all is said and done, and that was a lot at that moment in time, they were to love one another as Jesus had loved them. This had been culminated that day when Jesus had washed the feet of each of the Twelve. Jesus the Lord came not to lord it over others, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). And Jesus was about to lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13), even for the world (John 1:29; 1 John 2:2). And as his followers, they were to act in that same attitude.

This unconditional love still had boundaries. Jesus insisted on washing their feet, or else they would have no part in him (John 13:8, 10). Even the command to love means accountability. To love involves accountability all the way around. Jesus did not sweep Judas’s betrayal or Peter’s denial under the rug. Although things were set in motion, Judas’s fate was not sealed. Perhaps the tragedy came to be that Judas thought it so and we know the tragic ending. In Peter’s case it was different. He did repent, and as we can see in Jesus’s restoration of Peter, it was all about love (John 21:15-19).

Come what may, we’re to persist in love. In the way of Jesus: love for our neighbor as ourselves which includes love for our enemies. Love for all. And in the nature of who and what we are in Jesus and all that means and anticipates, love for each other, as we live in the privilege and responsibility of all that this love means.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary in your souls or lose heart.

Hebrews 12:1-3; NRSVue

Jesus began something new which did not disregard or throw away the old, but was a fulfilment of it. Jesus as the pioneer and perfecter of faith is the one we’re to follow, indeed look to (“fix our eyes on”- CEB) so that metaphorically, we can liken this way of faith to a unique race since Jesus ran it, and in the same way and kind of faith, we too are to run it. It’s evident that part of the Spirit’s work is to help us continue on in the way of Jesus. And an important part of that is to consider Jesus as portrayed to us in the gospel accounts: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

We are to have the faith of Jesus, the same kind of faith he had. It’s important for us to be focused on Jesus in that way. God invites us to enter into the same way of faith, to run this race like Jesus did. But it’s up to us to run it. When we run it in this way of faith, we can be certain that just as Jesus had the help of the Spirit, so will we.

In the great mystery, Jesus was just as human as we are, yet God, as well. Enter into that mystery, the Trinity, so that Jesus receives help from the Spirit, even his Spirit. So even though fully human like us, which too is quite important, Jesus is distinct. So when we enter into this race with our focus on him, we too are enabled by the Spirit of Jesus to lay aside every weight and in our case the sin which clings so closely to us, and persevere to the very end come what may, not growing weary or losing heart.

I think the text suggests that it’s a race we’re in not competitively, but supportively together, but that each of us has to run it, as well. It is the Jesus race no less, with the faith that he had, the culmination of faith pointed to in the great cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 11, perhaps watching us now as we witness each other’s faith. The faith that was made new and fulfilled, pioneered and perfected by Jesus.
